Hat tip to Conservatives4Palin.The federal deficit is worse -- much worse -- than you may think. That's because there's government-style accounting, which reported an official deficit in the last budget year of $1.3 trillion. Then there's real-world accounting, the kind that applies to businesses and state and local governments. By federal law and under accounting rules set by oversight boards, most entities have to include retirement commitments in their financial records. But Congress and the president use a different set of rules (of course), so shortfalls in obligations such as Social Security and Medicare aren't included in the official deficit report.USA Today, however, calculated the deficit with entitlement programs included. And the newspaper found -- are you ready, for this? Best hold on to something firm -- that the actual deficit last year was $5 trillion. There's more -- and you really should sit down for this one. To cover the promises it has made to retirees and current workers, the federal government would need $22.2 trillion (yes, that's with a T) set aside in reserves and earning interest. Such reserves don't exist, of course. Instead, the government continues to pile up more debt, and at increasingly alarming rates.

'The Buffett Rule' Charade
Mark Steyn:
If we were serious about reducing our deficit,we would eliminate the corporate welfare our government shills out, like the $600 million no interest loan Warren Buffett received a few years ago.In the end, free societies get the governments they deserve. So, if the American people wish to choose their chief executive on the basis of the “war on women,” the Republican theocrats’ confiscation of your contraceptives, or whatever other mangy and emaciated rabbit the Great Magician produces from his threadbare topper, they are free to do so, and they will live with the consequences. This week’s bit of ham-handed misdirection was “the Buffett Rule,” a not-so-disguised capital-gains-tax hike designed to ensure that Warren Buffett pays as much tax as his secretary. If the alleged Sage of Omaha is as exercised about this as his public effusions would suggest, I’d be in favor of repealing the prohibition on Bills of Attainder, and the old boy could sleep easy at night. But instead every other American “millionaire” will be subject to the new rule — because, as President Obama said this week, it “will help us close our deficit.”Wow! Who knew it was that easy?
A-hem. According to the Congressional Budget Office (the same nonpartisan bean-counters who project that on Obama’s current spending proposals the entire U.S. economy will cease to exist in 2027) Obama’s Buffett Rule will raise — stand well back — $3.2 billion per year. Or what the United States government currently borrows every 17 hours. So in 514 years it will have raised enough additional revenue to pay off the 2011 federal budget deficit. If you want to mark it on your calendar, 514 years is the year 2526. There’s a sporting chance Joe Biden will have retired from public life by then, but other than that I’m not making any bets.
Let’s go back to that presidential sound bite:“It will help us close our deficit.”
I’m beginning to suspect that the Oval Office teleprompter may be malfunctioning, or that perhaps that NBC News producer who “accidentally” edited George Zimmerman into sounding like a racist has now edited the smartest president of all time into sounding like an idiot. Either way, it appears the last seven words fell off the end of the sentence. What the president meant to say was:
“It will help us close our deficit . . . for 2011 . . . within a mere half millennium!” [Pause for deafening cheers and standing ovation.]
Sometimes societies become too stupid to survive. A nation that takes Barack Obama’s current rhetorical flourishes seriously is certainly well advanced along that dismal path. The current federal debt burden works out at about $140,000 per federal taxpayer, and President Obama is proposing to increase both debt and taxes. Are you one of those taxpayers? How much more do you want added to your $140,000 debt burden? As the Great Magician would say, pick a number, any number. Sorry, you’re wrong. Whatever you’re willing to bear, he’s got more lined up for you.

'Our Contemptuous President'
Some Saturday Steyn, for your reading pleasure:
Which brings us to another aspect of government that Obama apparently finds a frightful bore: budgets. In free societies, the executive is subject to the creative tensions of popular restraint, legislative restraint, judicial restraint, and fiscal restraint. All these the president has artfully sidestepped. In the last three years, the United States has ceased to have any meaningful budgeting at the national level, with the consequence that Washington piles on roughly a trillion dollars of new debt every seven or eight months. This week, before the fawning toadies at the Associated Press luncheon, Obama attacked Congressman Paul Ryan’s plan to prevent America plunging into the debt abyss and at least keep its fingernails clawing at the clumps on the cliff edge for a couple more decades. Don’t believe him, sneered the president. “Hundreds of national parks” will close. Parts of the country will see “complete elimination of air-traffic control.” We will be unable to “combat violent crime.” Two million mothers and young children will wind up without “access to healthy food.” Anything else? You bet. The Ryan plan will doom everything everywhere — “the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food that we eat.”
“This is not conjecture,” said the president. “These are facts.”
Speaking of facts, in the last year the federal government has added the equivalent of the GDP of Canada in new debt. Who’s buying it? The Chinese? Not so much. They’ve got pretty much all the Washington IOUs they need. Sixty-one percent of debt issued by the Treasury is bought by the Federal Reserve — which is to say the left hand of the U.S. government is lending money to the right hand of the U.S. government. That’s one reason the dollar is in steep decline against every major currency. Indeed, had it not been for the French and Germans et al. inaugurating the new century by inventing a currency for an artificial jurisdiction with even less connection to economic reality (the European Union), it’s likely that the markets would have yanked the rug out from under the dollar by now.

'Government Sets Record Deficit In February'
Verbatim post from The Washington Times:
The federal government recorded its worst monthly deficit in history in February, according to a preliminary report Wednesday from the Congressional Budget Office that said the deficit in fiscal year 2012 is already more than half a trillion dollars. We are headed towards the cliff of ruin Thelma & Louise style.
The CBO’s figures show that despite repeated efforts to trim spending, the government has borrowed 42 cents of every dollar it spent during the first five months of this fiscal year.
The nonpartisan agency projected the government will run a deficit of $229 billion in February, the highest monthly figure ever. The previous high was $223 billion a year ago, in February 2011.
It is the 41st straight month the government has run a deficit — itself a record streak that dates back to the final months of President George W. Bush’s tenure. Before now, the longest streak on record was 11 months.
For all of fiscal year 2012, which began Oct. 1, the budget analysts said the government has raised $869 billion in revenue but spent $1.5 trillion so far.
Congress and President Obama sparred for most of last year on how to cut spending, but the CBO’s figures show that spending has actually remained flat in 2012 once the timing of certain payments has been adjusted.
Mr. Obama last month released a budget that showed the government averaging $1 trillion deficits for the rest of this decade. House Republicans are working to write their own budget now, while Senate Democratic leader Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada has said he doubts his chamber will write a budget this year.

Real Inflation 'Up Some 8%'
From CBS Money Watch:
The reason for this deceit is all for the purpose of trying to keep our out of control Federal budget in the same universe as we are in.If our government used an honest method to measure inflation, entitlement spending would go through the roof, because entitlement spending is tied directly to the rate of inflation.
Forget the modest 3.1 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index, the government's widely used measure of inflation. Everyday prices are up some 8 percent over the past year, according to the American Institute for Economic Research. This is part of the shell game the Federal government plays with us.They measure inflation through purchases we may make once every few years,or as in the case of home purchases, maybe once in a lifetime. This is not only crazy, but also deceitful.
The not-for-profit research group measures inflation without looking at the big, one-time purchases that can skew the numbers. That means they don't look at the price of houses, furniture, appliances, cars, or computers. Instead, AIER focuses on Americans' typical daily purchases, such as food, gasoline, child care, prescription drugs, phone and television service, and other household products.
The institute contends that to get a good read on inflation's "sticker shock" effect, you must look at the cost of goods that the average household buys at least once a month and factor in only the kinds of expenses that are subject to change. That, too, eliminates the cost of housing because when you finance your home with a fixed-rate mortgage, that expense remains constant until you refinance or move.
The reason for this deceit is all for the purpose of trying to keep our out of control Federal budget in the same universe as we are in.If our government used an honest method to measure inflation, entitlement spending would go through the roof, because entitlement spending is tied directly to the rate of inflation.

'Handing Out Condoms On The Titanic'
A little fresh Steyn:
This is a very curious priority for a dying republic. “Birth control” is accessible, indeed ubiquitous, and, by comparison with anything from a gallon of gas to basic cable, one of the cheapest expenses in the average budget. Not even Rick Santorum, that notorious scourge of the sexually liberated, wishes to restrain the individual right to contraception. In fact, instead of trying to prevent pregnancy,we should be encouraging young girls to marry and have plenty of babies,a baby-boom for the 21st century. But alas, the left controls the culture and 'sexual liberation' is presented as the norm. The stay at home mom, instead of being celebrated and presented as a worthy goal to aspire to by any young woman,is vilified, presented as a rube or dumb, something young women should avoid like the plague. In the end,the sexual revolution will be one of the cause's to our national suicide.
But where is the compelling societal interest in the state prioritizing and subsidizing it? Especially when you’re already the Brokest Nation in History. Elsewhere around the developed world, prudent politicians are advocating natalist policies designed to restock their empty maternity wards. A few years ago, announcing tax incentives for three-child families, Peter Costello, formerly Timmy Geithner’s counterpart Down Under, put it this way: “Have one for Mum, one for Dad, and one for Australia.” But in America an oblivious political class, led by a president who characterizes young motherhood as a “punishment,” prefers to offer solutions to problems that don’t exist rather than the ones that are all too real. I think this is what they call handing out condoms on the Titanic.

A Government Induced Coma
From The Market Ticker:
This is why Obama wants to raise taxes on richest 1%,just to pay the interest to the national debt. That's why also,he is leaving Iraq and Afghanistan,to reduce costs just to pay the interest to the national debt.
If we don't balance our budget now and get a handle on our national debt,it will swallow us whole.
What Mr. Schwab is missing here is that The Fed is hardly an "independent" central bank. It is in fact beholden to Congress, which has pumped up $5 trillion in debt over the last three years. That debt has a servicing cost, and it is the "ultra low" interest rates that make this temporarily affordable. Our economy is in a government induced coma.If the economy was to take off and grow,it would cause a rise in interest rates that would make our national debt unserviceable. So our 'masters' in Washington -who sold us down the river to China- must keep a lid on our economy, lest we risk economic collapse because we can't pay the interest to our debt.
How is Congress going to service this debt when the rate of interest rises? More to the point, where are the adults in the room in Washington DC? We've had this on both sides of the aisle -- "we must stimulate the economy!" -- with borrowed money.
Outright bribery of the electorate both hasn't and can't work to lead to a durable recovery. Instead, it has backed Bernanke and Congress into a corner. When rates rise to just a blended 4% Congress will be facing a $600 billion annual interest bill. From where will the money come?
This is the trap into which Japan fell and what we are facing today. It is an extraordinarily destructive cycle that is very, very difficult to break, because it requires pulling the liquidity support at the same time Congress dramatically raises taxes, cuts spending (real cuts, not the imaginary cuts from "baseline" budgeting) or both. In short it requires admitting that we took fiscal heroin to avoid pain and accepting the accumulated damage for a period of time, accepting the "deferred depression" that we all tried to hide.

A Bald Face Lie
From USA TODAY:
This is perpetuation of the pro-growth/tax the rich myth. The deficit was surging well before Obama took office under Bush.It wasn't a lack of revenue causing the deficit to surge then, nor is it now,but spending.A key reason the deficit has surged in the past four years is that the government collected less tax revenue. In part, that's because the economy has yet to regain the millions of jobs lost during the Great Recession.

'The Vote Pump'
After watching this how can anyone NOT vote for Ron Paul for POTUS!
Everyone, but Ron Paul, seems to think we have a revenue problem.Whether its Obama who thinks we need to generate more revenue through higher taxes on the wealthy,or whether its Romney (or pick your favorite Republican) who believes we can generate more revenue by simply growing the economy at a faster rate.
Both of these are fairytale scenarios.Their isn't enough taxable income to support our government and its almost impossible for an economy to grow at a 9% rate over an extended period of time -which is what some economist say we would have to grow to sustain our current budget.
Their is only one way to avert disaster and that is Ron Paul's way,cut the budget and balance it now.
Hat tip to Hot Air.

Mark Steyn:
The advantage the United States enjoys is that, unlike Greece, it can print the currency in which its debt is denominated. But, even so, it still needs someone to buy it. The failure of Germany’s bond auction on Wednesday suggests that the world is running out of buyers for Western sovereign debt at historically low interest rates. And, were interest rates to return to their 1990–2010 average (5.7 percent), debt service alone would consume about 40 percent of federal revenues by mid-decade. That’s not paying down the debt, but just staying current on the interest payments.
And yet, when it comes to spending and stimulus and entitlements and agencies and regulations and bureaucrats, “More more more / How do you like it?” remains the way to bet. Will a Republican president make a difference to this grim trajectory? I would doubt it. Unless the public conversation shifts significantly, neither President Romney nor President Insert-Name-of-This-Week’s-UnRomney-Here will have a mandate for the measures necessary to save the republic.

North Carolina Governor Wants To 'Suspend Elections'
From The Daily Caller:
Hey,Bev,the reason we have a debt crisis to begin with,is because we have entrenched power in Washington that never leaves.Taking away the threat of elections would only encourage this bunch not detour them.
What we desperately need is term limits. We need to find away to send these people, who have found a career in public service, back into private life and out of our lives. Then maybe we could balance the budget.
Furthermore, not even,Dishonest Abe,suspended elections -he rigged them and suppressed voter turn-out,but to my knowledge he never suspended them.
Gov. Beverly Perdue needs to be either recalled or impeached from office for her anti-democratic ideals. No one should hold public trust when they in turn distrust the public.
As a way to solve the national debt crisis, North Carolina Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue recommends suspending congressional elections for the next couple of years.
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, North Carolina, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”
Perdue said she thinks that temporarily halting elections would allow members of Congress to focus on the economy. “You have to have more ability from Congress, I think, to work together and to get over the partisan bickering and focus on fixing things,” Perdue said.

The Problem In a Nutshell
Via Zion's Trumpet:
THE REAL PROBLEM WITH OUR GOVERNMENT SYSTEMBingo!
(exquisitely said)
The folks who are getting free sh*t,
don’t like the folks who are paying for the free sh*t,
because the folks who are paying for the free sh*t,
can no longer afford to pay for both the free sh*t and their
own sh*t.
And, the folks who are paying for the free sh*t,
want the free sh*t to stop.
And the folks who are getting the free sh*t,
want even MORE free sh*t on top of the free sh*t they’re
already getting!
Fast forward to Now.
The people who are forcing the people who PAY for the
free sh*t, have told the people who are RECEIVING the free sh*t,
That the people who are PAYING for the free sh*t,
are being…. mean.
So the people who are GETTING the free sh*t,
have lately been convinced they need to HATE the people who are PAYING
for the free sh*t, by the people who are forcing the people who are PAYING for the free sh*t and GIVING them the free sh*t in the first place.
That’s the straight sh*t! Thus endith the lesson.

A Game Of Charades
That's what all this debt ceiling squabble has been,a game of charades.Nobody-Republicans or Democrats- really wants to balance the budget and begin to reduce our debt;through gimmicks they move money here and there, call it a cut all the while they are increasing the budget. If you or I did that we would go to jail for fraud.
Here is what Moody's thinks of all our boondoggles;
One last thing,RUN,SARAH,RUN!
Here is what Moody's thinks of all our boondoggles;
The "limited magnitude" of both debt plans put forward by congressional leaders would not put the nation's AAA credit rating back on solid footing, Moody's Investors Service announced Friday. If the GOP had any guts-outside of 22 in the House they don't-they would tell Harry Reid where to stick it and do nothing, laying it right in Obama's lap telling him,"its your turn now big boy, prioritize the budget and cut it."That would never happen though,Obama would play hard ball and those delicate daisy's in the GOP would wilt in the sun and cave.We can all dream though, can't we.
"Reductions of the magnitude now being proposed, if adopted, would likely lead Moody's to adopt a negative outlook on the AAA rating," the credit rating agency said in a new report. "The chances of a significant improvement in the long-term credit profile of the government coming from deficit reductions of the magnitude proposed in either plan are not high."
It added that "prolonged debt ceiling deliberations" have increased the odds of a downgrade, but that the firm is still confident policymakers will avoid a default.
"It remains our expectation that the government will continue with timely debt service," the firm said.
It also clarified that as far as it is concerned, the nation will only default if it misses an interest or principal payment on U.S. debt, not if it misses payments on other obligations like federal employee salaries or Social Security benefits.
The report also gives credence to a claim popular among Republicans: that the government has enough cash to avoid a default even past the Aug. 2 deadline set by the Treasury Department.
"If the debt limit is not raised before August 2, we believe that the Treasury would give priority to debt service payments and could thus postpone a potential debt default for a number of days," it said. "Revenues would be more than adequate for some period of time to meet those payments, although other outlays would be severely reduced as a result."
Moody's previously put the nation's top credit rating on watch for a downgrade on July 13, as lawmakers continue to fight over a deal to raise the debt limit.
While Moody's is confident it will not have to downgrade the nation's rating because of a default, it maintained that long-term debt and deficit problems will continue to weigh on the AAA mark.
One last thing,RUN,SARAH,RUN!

We Know What To Do,We Just Lack The Will To Do What Is Right!
From Punditt & Pundette;
We can blame Obama,John Boehner,or any other politician all we want to,but at the end of the day this whole mess-this massive hole of debt we are in- is all our fault-We The People's fault. The American people always get what we want and the truth be told we want big government no matter how bad its crushing our economy. We may rail against it,but when it comes time to do something about it,we hem and haw and do very little to reduce the size of government, because we embrace security over liberty.
That's where the real debate is isn't it,between liberty and security.Would you rather be free, governing yourself, answering only to God and your family,or would you rather feel safe and secure, letting a government handle all the unpleasant things in life, making all those difficult decisions for you?We have chosen security, but security comes with a price, your liberty.
Call me cynical but I don't think it matters much either way. Trying to stanch a hemorrhage with a pinky-sized bandaid won't prevent the inevitable bleed-out. Most Americans are either oblivious to the fiscal mess we're in or panicked by Obama and the liberal media into the view that their intransigent representatives need to hurry up and "fix" this with more borrowing. What's clear is that we -- Congress and most Americans -- lack the will to deal with it in any significant way.

The Boat Is Sinking...............
The boat is sinking. We have and are taking on too much debt.We should be bailing water-cutting the budget- but are leaders in Washington are debating on how much to enlarge the hole in the bottom of the boat to take on more debt, because only in Washington Bizzarro World is the solution for existing debt is to add on more debt on top of that debt.
From The Market Ticker;
From The Market Ticker;
Buy Gold! Pretty soon our money wont be fit to wipe our own @$$ with.
S&P says it must be FOUR TRILLION. Four is greater than two - by 100%.
Therefore, no matter what sort of crap the Democrats spew, until and unless they put a credible plan on the table that achieves four trillion in actual deficit reduction neither party is serious.
No, this is not a pass for the Republicans. They haven't put forward a credible plan either.
The fact of the matter is that both parties are well-aware that addressing the problem will cause an immediate contraction in GDP. If you get rid of deficit spending it's an immediate 12%+ hit. If you cut in half it's 6%.
Pick one - there's no resolution that actually fixes the problem and avoids this.
Either come up with a $4+ trillion plan which is still going to produce a monstrous amount of damage and will only extend the time before we blow up - not fix it - or shut up and go home.
The markets are done with the bullcrap - they know the Democrats and Republicans are lying and they're not going to believe either of you any more. Either cut it out Reid - and Boehner - or watch the markets crash and, once the downgrades come, you will risk getting too close to the critical point in the gravity well at which point disaster is inevitable.

"The Great Charade"
From Mark Steyn;
America is in the car with leaders at the wheel on a LSD trip, everyone knows we are headed for a cliff that leads into the abyss at 100 mph,but those at the helm assure we can fly.We are doomed.
But in essence the spenders are negotiating among themselves how much debt they’re going to burden you with. It’s like you and your missus announcing you’ve set your new credit limit at $1.3 million, and then telling the bank to send demands for repayment to Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s kindergartner next door. The more these "negotiations" go on,the more depressed I become-with the exception of a few, their is absolutely NO ONE in Washington willing to do the right thing and reduce the size of our already bloated Federal government.Everyone seems to have accepted that the only course is to extend our already over-extended debt ceiling, only in Washington is adding more debt the answer to existing debt.
Nothing good is going to come from these ludicrously protracted negotiations over laughably meaningless accounting sleights-of-hand scheduled to kick in circa 2020. All the charade does is confirm to prudent analysts around the world that the depraved ruling class of the United States cannot self-correct, and, indeed, has no desire to.
America is in the car with leaders at the wheel on a LSD trip, everyone knows we are headed for a cliff that leads into the abyss at 100 mph,but those at the helm assure we can fly.We are doomed.

"Dear House Republicans, This is Your “Time For Choosing”
Via Red State;
Dear House Republicans,If the GOP caves and folds-as I think they will- me-thinks it will be time for a new political party for conservatives to call home.
In the election of 2010, voters sent you to Washington to do two things: (1) End Obamacare and (2) pull us back from the brink of financial ruin.
You have failed at the first task. Obamacare remains. You never even seriously attempted to restrain its funding or implementation. Heck, you haven’t even saved the incandescent lightbulb.
Will you now fail at the second task too?
If you cave, fold, or compromise on the President’s terms, you will have failed in both your missions. If you support Mitch McConnell’s plan, you will have decisively failed.
Now is a time for choosing. Now is your time for choosing. As I pointed out to John Boehner yesterday, despite what the pundits in Washington are telling you, it is you and not Obama who hold most of the cards. Obama has a legacy to worry about. Should the United States lose its bond rating, it will be called the “Obama Depression”. Congress does not get pinned with this stuff.
But there are a few points that you need to understand.
First, as the hours go on, the doom and gloom scenarios are going to get worse. By the end of July, Goldman Sachs, Ben Bernanke, and Timmy Geithner are going to tell you the world will end unless you raise the debt ceiling.
They did it with TARP too.
And now we know that the amount of money used in TARP was far less than allocated and a lot of the TARP situation involved Hank Paulson forcing solvent banks to play along. Oh, and a great many Republicans were primaried out of office.
Do not believe the doom and gloom. Wise decisions are never made when premised on fear.
Second, understand that the pundits and talking heads people expect you to listen to probably have it wrong. Remember, in 2010, they told you that if you kept being the Party of No, you’d lose. And yet . . .
As I’ve said repeatedly, the pundits and chattering class in Washington have a bias far greater than their liberal one — it is a good government bias. They believe Republicans and Democrats should come together and do grand bargains. Evil and stupid come together and do something evil and stupid. The press heralds it as bipartisanship at its finest, damn the results. We’ve been doing these grand bargains for years. Remember the last time we had a balanced budget in DC? That was at $5 trillion in national debt and no one bothered to read the fine print that the “balance” was actually based on a 10 year Congressional Budget Office projection.
Likewise, the pundits with a good government bias for some reason tend to ignore the Democrats’ problems. In 2010, the media told us you beat the Democrats because the Democrats got their message wrong, not their policy. We know the truth. But we also know that the Democrats were willing to lose to advance socialism. Are you willing to lose to advance freedom?
Finally, and here is my big point — you have to win this fight. If you do not win this fight, there will be no more chances to turn back government. Why? Because President Obama is holding senior citizens hostage with their social security checks.
If the President can force your hand by using entitlements as a lever to punish the American people if you don’t do as he wants, you will have established this as a precedent. From here on out, if you lose this fight, every time you balk at expanding government, social security checks will be withheld, medicare payments will be withheld, and in just a few short years, surgeries will be cancelled, vaccinations withheld, and hospitals shuttered.
It will all be because if you lose this fight now, the Democrats will know for certain from here on out that they can use withholding entitlements as a tool to force your hand.
You must win this fight. You must show you are not afraid. When Ben Bernanke brings the Grim Reaper in on August 1st to tell you we are all going to die, you must mock death and choose life — not bipartisan compromises that will keep growing government and ever more rapidly turn this nation into a third class banana republic. In short, you must hold the freaking line!
Now, some of you, if you have read this far, are saying, “But in 1995, the Republicans got blamed for shutting down the government.” They did. But that’s because Americans detest losers. And Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole threw in the towel instead of fighting. Their will broke. They did not break the President’s will. Of course, the next year the GOP still only lost 9 House seats and actually gained Senate seats. Imagine what would have happened had they broken the President’s will.

This is a time for choosing. Choose wisely.
